Came home to find that my migratory neighbors are in town for their annual visit. They'll stay for about a week.

We're seeing Canadas starting to stake out nesting spots. Worth it to steer clear of them for a while.

We also saw a pair of Osprey laying claim to a nest platform. Couldn't get a picture, as he was being extra-attentive and took off on patrol.

I saw an osprey building a nest near the mouth of the Severn yesterday.
I have a big river birch in my front yard. I never realized how many small branches those trees just drop every year. As I cleaned up it occured to me that these trees are native to exactly the same kinds of areas favored by ospreys and eagles who need huge numbers of branches to build their nests every year.

Clearly I now need an osprey family.

Not in Maryland, but close enough. I think it’s a red tail hawk.

We took a friend to DC yesterday. There was a big red-tailed hawk riding the air currents over the west front of the Capitol, looking for squirrels.

Saw two of them yesterday 30 yards apart from each other. What kind of snakes are they?

Those are called a$$hole snakes. They're seriously the most aggressive snakes I've ever come across and they're built like pitbulls.
