    "Available once again!

RGUNS has located a small batch of Soviet Mosin-Nagant M1938 7.62x54mmR Carbines!

The M1938 is a carbine based on the M1891/30 design that was produced from 1939 to 1945 at the Izhevsk arsenal and in 1940 and 1944 at Tula. They were intended for use by second-echelon and noncombatant troops. Essentially a M1891/30 with a shortened barrel and shortened stock (the M38 is 40 inches in overall length versus 48 inches overall length for the Model 91/30). The M38 was replaced by the M44 carbine in 1944.

These carbines are in very good to excellent condition, and include a sling, bayonet and ammo pouch, and are available for $200.00."

I think just the M44 had the bayonet attached by a folding mechanism where the M38 it was a seperate piece that has to be placed on just like a 91/30

M38 and M44 were separate models, the M44 differences include a slightly different front sight block and of course the side folding bayonet. The M38 is considered rarer and therefore has averaged higher prices on the collector market of late. Some M38's during the critical wartime years have rough finished receivers (known as "corncob" receivers).

If you are building a collection, get both. I just picked up an M38 this past weekend from another member here for less than what RGuns is selling them for, 1943 "corncob" Ishvesk wearing a laminated M44 stock (which is correct as the later M38's were produced with M44 stocks from 1943-45).

The M38 actually doesn't accept any bayonet. It was one of the design disadvantages that led to the M44.

I think this is also a more reasonable price than the $200 AIM M44's. The 38's are a rarer bird and more collectible. If anybody gets one give us a report on the condition. The barrel in particular. I stay away from counterbored rifles. Just a personl thing...

One thing not noted by RGuns but critical to value on these is whether the stock is an actual M38 or an M44 (identifiable by the right side cutaway for the bayo)?

The bayonet groove looks like the one below. Both the M38 and M91/59 stocks do not have the groove.
