Just to answer my own question, I believe it is considered regulated as an AR copy, which is stupid, considering it's a short-stroke gas piston design. I guess it could still fall under the HBAR exception but it seems doubtful since one of the features is the fluted barrel (under the handguard, I believe).

According to LWRC they are heavy contoured barrels.
