I need to buy more powder. I have only used bulls eye so far and would like to use a powder that needs a little more volume then bulls eye. Unique looks like it fits my needs. What are your feelings on this powder for .38s, .357s, & .44mag?

    Thanks

    From my limited experience.
A bit dirty, but not too bad.
A 5 Gr load more than 1/2 fills the .357 case.
Meters very smoothly, but is thin enough that it can easily cause sliding powder measures to bind up.
Lets me run 158 Gr hard-cast SWC at about 1000FPS without pressure signs & has very little flash in a 6" .357.
Not really suited to jacketed rounds in .357 as it brings pressures up before desired velocity is reached. I was aiming for a 125 Gr JHP @ 1350 & had to switch to H110 to get that kind of performance.

"Unique" is a good name for the Powder. Been around about 100 years, can use it in pistol, shotgun and reduced rifle loads.
Good for use with cast bullets
    :-)
Good choice for 38,357 and 45 ACP.It bulks out nicely and fills the case. Hard to miss a double charge with it.
It is a bit smokey and can leave residue if bullets are not crimped right or it short barrel pieces.
We load everything from 32acp to 45 Colt with Unique.

Unique is a great powder. All the Hercules (Alliant) powders seem to be a little dirtier, Bullseye especially. I use Unique in .45 ACP, .44 spec., .45 Colt, and recently .357 Sig. It's a consistent and accurate powder that allows for higher velocity at lower pressures.

I burn a bunch of Unique in .44 mag.
It works well, is predictable, and it easy to measure. Only downside is it's pretty dirty. Using a good crimp helps some but it's still dirty.

I used Unique as a good all round powder when I reloaded. 9mm, shotgun and 9.0 grains for jacketed 158 gr. .357's. Don't remember the other loads but it was GREAT stuff.

I use Unique a lot in 44 mag and it is very accurate with the magnum loads. Have been using Hodgdon Titegroup as a wide spectrum clean loading powder for a very wide range of calibers for target shooting speeds. Its a bit cleaner than Unique, but still goes quite a long ways.....Oh yeah....I always use a powder cop die to make sure I don't inadvertently double charge....I consider it a safety necessity.....stay safe

My email address is johnandnanc. Nancy is still doing as well as she can. I don't know how long it has been since you saw us but she had a brain tumor in 2004 which put her in a wheel chair.

Where did we know each other from?

So far unique is working for me. I think I found the right load for berry bullet wad cutter. Had some nice groups the other day at the range. Now I need to take both .357's to see if this load works in both.

    thanks for the info

I started reloading .45ACP with Unique. It's accurate, but as others have said, it's pretty dirty. I use Bullseye for target loads (also pretty dirty) and W231 or 700x for practice loads and defensive rounds. 231 and 700x meters better on my progressive press and isn't nearly as dirty as the Alliant pistol powders.

Another vote for Unique. I use it in at least 90% of my straight wall pistol rounds (380, 9mm, 38/357, 44, 45). It may be a bit dirty, but it is often one of the top performing powders in pistol cases. There are so many powders available that sticking to just a few helps simplify things.

Use Unique with a moderate crimp and it helps the burn a little but it's still dirty.
I still burn a bunch of it yearly but am leaning more towards Universal Clays.
Close to the same burn but much cleaner.

I'll vote for Unique too. I've used it for over 20 years in pistol calibers ranging from .380 to .44 mag.

Unique is sooty. But it's worked well for me in .380, 9mm, 40S&W, .45acp, .45LC and many other hand loads like 7.62x25 and 7.62x38 .For more powerfull rounds (like .357 & .44 mag) I use it to power cast boolits.

Unique is a shotgun powder. But it's very versatile.
