I like the idea of having a lever action rifle but don't know if what is available is worth getting. Maybe .357 so I don't need to stock another caliber ammo but that isn't a necessity if a different caliber is that much better. Are there any real negative aspects of Lever Action guns. Also any recommendation for what to NOT get would be great too. I see a Marlin 30-30 at walmart but just don't think those would be a great buy.

I know this post isn't very specific, just trying to get a feel what to look at.

Everyone needs at least one lever.

They will be the new high capacity rifles when semi-autos are confiscated.

    I have one in .30-30.

Need to buy one in .45 LC

everyone should have 1 or more lever action rifles. From what I understand the newer Marlins' quality can be hit or miss. Look for an older one in good shape.

I think a lever action is a great addition to anyone's collection. Depending on caliber, it can be a very viable defensive weapon against two and four legged critters. If I were to buy a Marlin, I would try to find a used one with JM stamped on the barrel. The quality control seems to have been better on them as opposed to the more recent years. That's not to say that the new ones aren't any good or just as good...just work the action and look at the fit and finish of a new one. You will probably find a good one. 30-30 is a good caliber...quite a few deer, bear, and other game along with bad two legged varmints have been taken with the cartridge.

Look for a nice pre 64 Winchester 94 in 30-30, it is a good handling gun with penty of fire power.
ammo will be easy to find and it will go up in value.

I was pretty sure these were the type of responses i'd see. Don't see them when i go into LGS so i'm having a problem checking them out. Wish Engage was closer (I'm close to Ft Meade).

Even during the great ammo shortage, 30-30 was always in stock.

I hear Marlin has sorted out quality issues on some guns and they are taking it sliw to re-introduce previous models. Might be good to check something out before deer season.

    Look on GunBroker.

    I found a pre-safety Glenfield (Marlin) Model 30A.

Very well made with a smooth action.

Pistol caliber lever actions are some of the most fun to shoot guns out there, something about actually using an action that is capable of supporting rapid fire feels ............good.

Low recoil rounds like .38s are extremely fun.

Marlins have gotten out of control on price in pistol calibers, and of course .357 is the hardest to find. .30-30 can be found any day of he week. The current Remington made guns are a major step down, I bought one (336Y) it works its a good truck gun and was cost effective but the fit and finish of the metal is only a hair better than the Rossi. The laminate wood is nice.

Rossi's are very utilitarian but affordable and ok with some tweaking for reliability (mainly little adjustments to the bullet guides)

Marlins are fantastic but as noted above a JM stamped gun will be very $$$$s.

Winchester 94AE trappers still can be found at fairly reasonable prices, but they have been creeping up.

Any of the above will work fine.

Make sure you check out the lever porn thread.
