Maryland: Last Chance to Defeat Senate Bill 281 – ACT NOW

Today, Senate Bill 281http://www.nramedia.org/t/1390355/67062431/22610/0/ received final approval in the House of Delegates by a 78 to 61 vote. On the House floor, the bill was made even worse as Delegates stripped out a committee amendment that would have exempted active duty military and veterans under age 21 from the handgun licensing and training requirements. This extremist anti-gun bill now goes back to the state Senate as soon as TODAY (my change) for a concurrence vote on the House amendments. This is your last chance to stop Governor Martin O’Malley’s seizure of your Second Amendment rights.

It is critical that you contact Senate President Mike Miller and your state Senator IMMEDIATELY. Strongly urge them to oppose concurrence to the House version of Senate Bill 281.
This is your state Senator’s final chance to protect YOUR Second Amendment rights.

Senate Bill 281 targets and punishes law-abiding gun owners and sportsmen for exercising our fundamental right to keep and bear arms.
Please contact Senate President Mike Miller and your state Senator and respectfully urge them to protect your Second Amendment rights by OPPOSING concurrence with the House-amended Senate Bill 281.

Sadly, at this juncture I agree with cantonglocker. I have put over a week's worth of work personally being in Annapolis not to mention the many hours writing and calling. I believe that my Maryland citizenship, time in military service and vote has given me the right to complain separate of my efforts. It is clear from the house amendment votes the fix is in and yes, it is time for efforts to be directed towards new tactics. It is a sad time but the fight is not over. It is time for the fight to shift to a different battlefield.

I can't agree more. But let no stone go unturned. I will be the first to tell you that if we were doing what we really needed to do we would not be all worked up and full of passion now. We should have been all fired up last election day. And the election day before that and the one before that.

The problem is, and unlike the good people from MSI getting everyone on board with these trips to Annapolis the average Joe doesn't make the same effort on ELECTION DAY.

I'm not pointing the finger at you or anyone in this group. But you know as well as I that far to many do not lift a finger come election day to learn the issues and go and vote for someone that cares about their rights.

After Every election I talk to MANY people that are full of excuses of why they never made it to the poles. These dirt bags that have made a life out of telling us how to live in Maryland count on our laziness not to bother to find out who they are and what they stand for.

They know that Nov 2014 is a long way off and if everyone does what they always do they will forget all about what is happening here and stay how to watch TV come election day.

I bet more then half the people in these threads do not even know who their representatives are, how they voted, or what voting district they live in.

When does it go back to the senate for final approval?
Today, apparently. I see four possible outcomes:
1. It passes. (Most likely outcome, unfortunately.)
2. It fails and it goes to committee. They amend it to be harsher, it passes the House and Senate, and we get screwed.
3. It fails and it goes to committee. They can't agree on it. It fails, or fails to win a Senate or House vote. We win.
4. It fails, and it goes to committee. Minor changes are made, and it passes the House and Senate.

To be very blunt, I'd like to know the odds on getting our favored outcome in a failure situation. I don't want to "win", only to lose even worse in the end. To me, this basically comes down to "are the antis in the Senate so pissed off about compromise that they're going to nuke this thing out of spite?" My gut answer is, based on Frosh rolling over early on certain provisions, is no.

All I can say is if you don't make the effort, don't complain about what they do to you.
Have to agree. I have called and written every living being I could possibly think of. The problem we, the Pro 2A individuals, have is there are many out there that have the "let the other guy do it" OR "it's a done deal so why bother?" attitude. I have receive responses for every Republican I have contacted and nothing but 'form responses' (we have received your letter) from every Democrat. I find that telling in its own way.

Still not over. Contact your senators. We very nearly had a filibuster last time.

You new guys that for some reason just have to post up about how all is lost take it elsewhere, not on this forum.

This may seem counter-intuitive, but I almost think we should call Miller and tell them to pass it. The thought of Conference committee scares me the most. Even if they make this more draconian by a factor of 100, I don't see them voting it down out of a conference committee.

All of us (some much more than others) have put in a ton of effort. The legislative fix is in. Its time for new tactics to destroy this :innocent0

I understand how you feel. But when at war you can never stop defending yourself. enough is never enough when people are attacking things you love like freedom. We have to try everything and anything. It can't stop here with this. We need to support MSI (I assume) and hopefully SAF that will be filing suite. After that we need to stay fired up and insure we as well as everyone we can influance to go and vote at every opportunity from now until you die!

The fight is never over, and enough is never enough as long as their people in the world that want to harm you and take things you love from you.

Our forefathers left their home land to get away from these very people we are fighting. Unfortunately they brought some of the same people and way of thinking they wanted to get away from with them. Over the years many more of these people with this "I will tell you how to live" way of thinking came to the US. Many of them our our politicians today.

The constitutions has made it more difficult for them to accomplish their goals of control and socialism. But not impossible. The constitution can't do it alone without people that pay attention and are willing to put themselves out and show up on election day.

My reps in deep blue MoCo basically told me they're voting for it no matter what from day one, not to mention that they co-sponsored the thing. Beating my head against the wall is not my definition of time well spent.

Done! I would like the list of the Domocrats that voted for this so that I can call them up and blame them for every murder that happens in Maryland under their law.

I hate reading the names of our reps. It is rather sad.

Crap, I always forget about how Filibuster works in Maryland. We may be able to get something done, it was Brochin that let us down before, right? Surely he's heard the displeasure, he needs to know he has one last shot if it ones down to a closure vote.

it became clear that there have been two distinct groups of folks here on MDS; the optimists - the ones who truly believed all of our efforts with protesting and rallying in Annapolis would make our elected officials sit up and say, "oh gee - maybe we shouldn't pass this bill," and the realists - the ones who knew from the very beginning of this process that we were going to get screwed and screwed bad.
Both groups were essentially correct. SB281 was always a good bet to pass no matter what we did, if only because so many Marylanders don't mind an AWB. On the other hand, the bill got gutted in spectacular fashion because of our efforts. So I wouldn't classify anyone's efforts in vain; we went from an utterly draconian AWB to one that just really sucks.

While I tend to fall into the latter group, I still made the calls, sent the letters, sent emails, attended rallies and testified in Annapolis.
Me, too. At the very least, I know I fought the good fight, and I can tell my kids as much.
