I recently bought my first handgun and I'm interested in shooting IDPA. I have a lot of experience with long guns but very limited experience with handguns - probably 500 rounds or so at paper. I have no experience or knowledge of using cover etc.

Can anyone recommend a training organization that would get me started with some defensive/IDPA skills? Practical Firearms Training in WV was suggested to me but I have scheduling conflicts plus it's like 4 hours away...

peacemaker has some intro classes for competitive pistol shooting.

they also have monthly idpa and uspsa matches there.

I normally run an idpa squad there, so if you signup for the AM Idpa match, I'd be happy to show you the ropes and ensure you have a safe and fun first match. I'm David.

Defense/tactical training is a whole other thing. Peacemaker does that as do a lot of other places.

Read thru all the posts in the Competition section and you'll get a feel for the gear you need, basically just a decent holster, two mag pouches (or just use your back pocket), two or preferably three mags and you're good to go. Eye and ear protection of course. Bring 150 rounds of ammo for the morning, and another 150 if you decide to stay and shoot a PM match. Keep your gun unloaded in a bag or case until you discuss how to gear up with a range/safety officer.

but seriously, sign up for uspsa and/or idpa there and i'll make sure you get a thorough review/walkthrough so you can safely shoot your first match and have a lot of fun. there were a lot of first-time shooters there this past Saturday, so you'll be in good company. guessing this range is no more than half an hour from Hagerstown.

this is a free intro to 3 gun match this saturday, they supply all the guns and ammo. I haven't done this, but can't believe it wouldn't be a great intro into competitive shooting. email them for more details, ask if you can use your own gun, etc.

It's all rimfire so I doubt they'll let him run his gun.
