I have looked around this forum and others for info on .223 vs. 5.56 ammo for ARs, and understand that the rule of thumb is .223 in a 5.56 but not 5.56 in a .223.
My Colt is stamped 5.56 on the barrel but the lower is stamped CAL. 223.
    So...?

if the barrel is chambered in 5.56 then you're good to go. many of the lowers say .223 because some countries will not allow the sale of a weapon stamped 5.56 NATO.

i'm sure there's plenty of AR owners out there who's lower says "5.56" but the weapon is actually chambered in some other caliber like 6.5 or 6.8

there was an article in American Rifleman a few months ago about this. It states you can fire a .223 out of a 5.56 but not the other way around. "Military" ammo (5.56) is supposed to have greater chamber pressures than the safe working load of a .223 chamber.

A 5.56 chambered weapon is good just for that "what if I find 1500 rounds of surplus 5.56 fot $150" scenario.
