Hello I am going to be purchasing my first ar-15. I dont wnat to spend more than I have to. It is for shtf situations or a zombie epidemic. I was wondering what a good model for the money is. If possible ( i know its going to be hard) I would like to spend less than $600 but up to $700

I have thought about the smith & wesson sport
DPMS has an ar15 for under $600 and I understand you can often find palmetto state amrory ar15 rifles for $600 and change.

I had also thought about the ak platform that shoots a .223 but I am not sure about that and dont know much about it.

You can order a kit and a stripped lower from PSA and be in that range. S&W M&P15 sport is a good option too. It's easy to get carried away if you build one. I started with a $650 budget; I'm at $900+ now and while I have a functional rifle, I'm still not done.

Honestly, my best suggestion - save another $200 up, if you can get your budget up to $800 - $900, you'll have so many more options with known and proven components from established and highly regarded makers to pick and choose from.

If you can't or don't want to wait, the S&W M&P15 is a good solid choice to get you up and running, and if your lucky, you may be able to find a few at prices within your range, maybe just a touch higher...

If you're saying you want a brand-new complete rifle for no more than $700, then, yes, S&W M&P15 Sport all the way. It's perfect for first-timers on a limited budget.

If you are buying for SHTF or zombies, consider an AK instead. More reliable and tougher then an AR. The 7.62x39 ammo is also cheaper and packs more wallop then .223.
