So I went to Camp Perry this past weekend to shoot in the JCG Match. We went to the North Store on Friday afternoon and basically found empty racks. There were no rack, field, or service grade M1's. There were a few worn 03A3's and a lot of M1C and M1D sniper rifles. It was pretty much the same way on Saturday afternoon. There were only two rack grade M1's left and a few worn 03A3's. We decided to go to the store on Sunday before we left. We got there before it opened and got in line. When the store opened, we saw full racks of field grade and rack grade M1's as well as two racks of 03A3's.
I ended up buying this field grade Springfield M1. It's a 3.73mil (April 1945) with a 1-52 barrel gauging at ME1/TE3, which is actually better than either of my two service grades I got in 2012. The stock looked a bit ugly at the time since it had dents and dings from being stacked like firewood on the boat ride back from Greece. It's an HRA stock with a really crisp DAS cartouche. The trigger group appears to be all HRA and the bolt is WRA.
This is what it looks like after I steamed the stock and poured boiling water on it to lift the dents and clean off the old finish, which appeared to be splotchy tung oil that had dried into a varnish shine. Then I lightly sanded down the raised grain with 150 and 320 grit before giving it a coat of BLO. I also cleaned the caked cosmoline off of the metal.
