A friend stopped me in the hall today and gave me this info:

    He has acquired this:

    7.91
    AX (Feinmechanische werke GMBH Erfurt)
    Serial 3065
    Model-98
280 is stamped 3 times on the side of the breech and once on the front sight shroud.
It also came with a wooden presentation box and white gun blanket.

He also said there are Nazi symbols on it

Would anyone have any info on it? many thanks in advance!

I'm jealous just by the sound of it!

Would be worth twice as much if it came with a gray blanket...

I don't even know what that means? Has he stumbled onto something nice? Where would I go to get some history or info on what he's got?

    Thanks

It is a funny.... if you cruise the auction sites there is a guy that sells guns (many C&R) all modeled with a grey blanket. Sort of an inside joke to a lot of us.

AX (Erfurt) coded K98k rifle. The "AX" code is fairly desirable to K98k collectors as Erfurt was one of the smaller manufacturers of the k98k rifle.

"280" is the waffenampt code for ERMA (Erfurt) and would be marked on ERMA made parts.

Besides that, its hard to make a determination as to anything else about it without more information or pictures.

There should be a date on the receiver below the "AX". The AX code was only used from 1940 to 1941 as ERMA stopped production of the k98k to focus on making submachine guns.

Is it Sporterized? Bringback? Russian, Yugo, Romanian, (etc.) Capture?

Matching serial numbers on the parts?

The "presentation box" was probably made by a previous owner.

Ah true, anythings possible I s'pose

TomisinMd, Can you see if your friend can provide you with some pictures of the rifle and then post them here?

I'm especially interested as it might be the Russian Capture AX 1940 K98k that I had bought and sold a few years ago. The serial number sounds exactly the same if I remember correctly.

I asked him for some pictures. He did say all serial numbers match, like 4 or 5 of them all over, including the hood for the front sight. year is 41
I'll have him take a picture of this blanket its wrapped in as well! ;)

While the picture give us some insight, there really isn't much that can be determined from it. We need to see more close up pictures of the stock, the receiver, bolt, front sight/sight hood, barrel bands and all of the markings that are on the rifle.

K98k's can be quite complicated and have many different variations from different years, manufacturers and usage. So every detail helps and is needed for any kind of detailed evaluation.

Also, I believe the sling is on backwards. The rear barrel band needs to be flipped around to the other side

This ^^^ is a potential sign of a mismatched gun.

Did anybody notice the bolt is cocked and safety is on??? Before anybody does ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!! CHECK TO MAKE SURE THE GUN IS NOT LOADED!!!!!!!!!!!! If you don't know how to do it safely, GET SOMEBODY THAT DOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ill see what he says about the barrel band. Interesting since all of the serial numbers match.
