The AWB is about feeling good and control. It has nothing to do with results.

Many liberal policies are about feeling good and control with no regard for positive results. It could be argued that *many* well intentioned liberal policies have not only backfired, but made things worse: Affirmative action, the continued and seemingly unlimited extensions of unemployment benefits, gun policies in many areas of the country, etc..
Free people have the right to defend themselves from those who feel they are entitled to take their hard earned property, harm their families, etc.. It's amazing how many anti-gun people change their tunes when their own families, property, or themselves have been violated - and the police are there only to take a report or cart out bodies - unfortunately, not the criminals.

Yes it worked. It kept law abiding citizens from buying guns. That's all it was intended to do.

No kidding. They need to figure out a way to fill the prisons, artificially inflate police presence, and engage in civil forfeiture to make an AWB as successful as our war on drugs.
