Am I the only one who thought that the OP wanted equipment to go to decampground, from the title.

What's a takedown detent spring? And... is it a good idea to always have more than four on hand?

It's the spring for the detent that keeps the pins in place on an AR. I always recommend assembly in a plastic bag for that part. It'll catch them if you launch one.

I lost one when I was assembling a lower a few months ago and made a "temporary" one out of a piece of coat hanger. Its still working OK!

Coat hangers (wire type) are a multitool almost as useful as duct tape. To name just a few:

    hanging up coats,
    making AR detents,
    welding rod (in a pinch),
major heat source by repeatedly bending it in one spot to start a fire on dry paper or burn a friend's plumber crack ass (don't ask me how I know 'bout that one:innocent0:innocent6:),
a crude but effective abortion tool,
    etc.

I have several in my workshop...where exactly I can't say...last seen flying toward points unknown. Guess I'll try the magnet idea.

I found that when I built my first lower to put a large box in front of the lower for them to fly into. Then I discovered a clever way to put them in with a plastic punch that doesn't let them fly away. I have a few spares if you are ever in Cecil county.
