Here's an interesting article about how the US stored the multitude of small arms built and used in WW2 during 1946-1947 or so. No mention of cosmoline.

I need to look at mine. I bet those straps left some marks on the stocks.

And I wonder why they did not want to use wood crates and wax paper?

Possibly because wood crates would probably rot in the 50 years these were meant to last for.

I basically do that now. Surplus 120mm mortar shell crates can hold a lot of handguns and dessicant packs, but I pad mine better.
