    * or the extractor spring? "The main culprit I've seen in current Hi Powers being less than reliable with any type of ammunition has been weak extractor springs. It has been my experience that the Hi Power requires stout ones. If you have a Hi Power that is failing to extract and eject fired cases, this may very well be the problem and is where I would begin looking. " http://www.hipowersandhandguns.com/9mm_hi_power_reliability.htm

Taking my Luger M80 (FEG) to the range today to test my new extractor & spring.

The old spring was shorter and had MUCH less tension than the replacement I got from Browing. The hook on my old extractor doesn't look that bad ... the new spring had so much more tension I wasn't sure it would let the extractor ride over the lip of a new round, but it does.

I could see getting a new Mark II or Mark III slide fitted. I really like this pistol. It fits my hand better than most, it shoots well, and I just plain like the Hi Power.

I got a used "modern" slide on ebay for $120 a year or two ago for one of my CDI HPs...Works perfek...

    Didn't the slide require fitting?

Did you keep the old barrel?

I need to clean the crud from under my extractor first. That might be all it needs.

Actually, better sights would be nice, too.

Took mine out today with a few other old ass guns. Fired about 50 rounds. Mixed wolf and UMC. Only one failure. Once the slide locked open with one round still in the mag I won't comment on accuracy as I'm a pretty bad handgun shot(looking for good instruction -any suggestions).
I like the ergonomics but to be honest I'm a little underwhelmed. It might be heresy but I think I like my Star B better.

What sort of pistol is the one at the bottom of the picture?

I also got out with mine today, but had a different experience. I'm old, fat, have shaky hands and fading sight, but I love the hell out of my ratty old FN hi-power. I did have a couple of problems with ejection, so I'll have to do some more work on that, but the gun ran well most of the time. I think that it fits my hand as well as any gun that I own.

As for accuracy, I wanted to post some targets, but by the time I got home it was raining pretty hard. I'll have to dig them out of the case in the back of the truck tomorrow and take pictures, but one mag that I shot, with my elbows on a bench, produced pretty much one ragged hole with a flyer not far away. My "old school" offhand position (one arm extended from profile stance) produced a pretty respectable grouping.

Maybe it's not such a bad thing that my barrel number doesn't match the rest of the gun. I suspect that the original was getting shot out, and the newer replacement is in pretty nice condition.

That is one, monster sized hammer on that Hi-Power.

I was looking into it and found that some of the smaller hammers were resulting in light hammer strikes which in turn failed to set off the round.

The light strikes went away 100% when they switched to the heavier hammers.

For accuracy, I don't think its any heresy to prefer the Star B. IMO a generally more accurate pistol, though the HP has other advantages.
