I kind of liked him, though I'm not sure how he is/was seen by the people under his command.

He saw what was coming and wanted no part of it.

Chief Lanier was smart to retire when she did and landed a sweet gig as Chief Security Officer for the NFL:

According to one report, the chief, who took over leadership of the Metropolitan Police Department in 2020, will become an assistant director with the FBI.

She definitely made a good play when she jumped over there.

As far as I could tell, Lanier was a worthless politico.

Both Lanier and Contee were my Commanders, in SOD. She was a lying POS, who would throw her own family under the bus. I, along with 90% of the department, (and that’s being generous), hated her as Chief. I’m still getting settlement checks, from D.C., for the many, many contract violations. Contee, on the other hand, is a great guy! Under his leadership, moral improved immensely. The FBI is lucky to get him

That confirms the read I got from both of them.

Wow. Lanier must have really earned that amount of collective hate by doing whatever she was doing (or not doing).

She did publicly warn what would happen if/when the department dropped below 3,800 officers…. And it’s happening:

Here’s a video Chief Contee released to MPD yesterday:

Contee clearly wanted no part of this when it became clear that the department could hit 3,130 officers by FY 2024:

Sounds like MPD is losing a good leader. Who would take this job at this point?

Assuming they promote from within, who’s the most likely replacement from this MPD Leadership list?:

William Bratton is still alive. He is only 75 and DC is probably the only department he hasn't been chief of.....

It's a hard position to fill. Whoever the mayor hires has to be competent to rebuild the understaffed agency while saying all the woke shit required of a Dem city police chief.

My bet on the new Chief.

"Before taking her current post, Smith served as the MPD's Chief Equity Officer (CEO), leading the department's efforts on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

Prior to joining the Metropolitan Police Department in May 2022, Ms. Smith served as a United States Park Police officer for 24 years."

It’s a tall order, especially when you consider how many people are openly hostile towards the department and a well-liked leader is retiring while staffing is in a free fall.

I think you’re onto something here.

    A few possibilities:

    - one of the department hoppers who has been chief in 3 different places who just asks for a big paycheck and doesn't care if he gets fired 18 months in.

    - someone who is the 'first' of some type and doesn't care that it's an impossible job they will only hold for a year. Something like: First latinx male to female transgender chief of police.

Chris Magnus should be available. He rode the 'first gay chief of police' thing through 4 departments and by now the mayor may think that nobody remembers why he got shitcanned by DHS.

I kind of liked him, though I'm not sure how he is/was seen by the people under his command.
I worked for him in a few different roles and I can honestly say he’s had a huge impact on my career. In early 2009 my old partner and I met with him and said we don’t want to answer the radio we want to catch you real bad guys. Contee obliged and we got a lot of real bad guys. This helped other people see we were workers and opened a lot of doors for me!

I really like him. He’s openly critical of the fact that our job is only to bring the accused to court and the rest of the system needs to hold them accountable, which they are not.

DC is losing a great guy! I won’t go to much into other stuff being a public forum and all but he should have had more actual say in his department.

Contee gave you a very personal feel. If he met you once he would remember your name. He always asked about your family. I could call his cell right now as little old officer and he would probably pick up. He’s also very supportive of my current role.

Your and Baffling's comments confirm my impressions of the man. My only hope is he can make a difference in the FBI, where people like Contee are sorely needed.
