No names released yet, but deceased shooter described as a grad student who did undergrad at Morgan State. Allegedly used a handgun he legally purchased in Maryland last year but is als described tentatively as having possessed also an Uzi "submachine gun."

Tragic for sure. Condolences to the families.

And bad timing...to say the least. If Uzi is full auto, it is irrelevant to current MD debate over AWB, but problematic as a fear-raising symbol. If semi-auto, it is already banned for sale or transfer in MD.

This will raise more, difficult questions about mental health screening and background checks in any case.

The media is notorious for thinking everything is a machine gun. Much like the Luger Tec-9 reported in NYC a year or so ago.

"The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity in order to candidly discuss the ongoing probe, said detectives believe Green could have inflicted far more serious damage with the more high-powered weapon, if he had chosen to do so."

    How is this relevant??

Irrelevant to truthful, knowledgeable, individuals, that is to say, none of our opposition of dissembling useful idiots and our beloved leaders.

Right. Equally true to say he could've inflicted far less damage if he had been a mentally balanced person with the same firearm.

The antis always get the sound bites.

Just like the guy who got arrested for trespassing last week on school grounds. The police (for some reason) searched his house and found an AK. The freaking news couldn't shut up about it.

WTF does it have to do with his arrest? Not a d@mn thing. :mad54:

What, they would have been more dead? They can never pass up an opportunity to confuse the public about guns, even when it's nonsensical.

I wonder if he used a high capacity matchbook to start the fire or one of those semi-automatic butane lighters?

I think someone could do more damage driving a pick up truck through the front window of a chipotle at noon.

wait, WAIT ONE MINUTE! Killing someone is against the law, so is shooting someone. How the hell could of something like this have happened when we have LAWS AGAINST THIS KIND OF THING???? You mean to tell me that this guy wasn't following the law????

    Did anybody read the comments....?

The NRA rejoices whenever a gun murder is committed - all the better to scare people into buying more firearms, for self-protection from everyone else buying firearms.

Police now report second weapon was a semi-automatic. If an Uzi semi-auto pistol, that has long been banned for sale or transfer (too long for a 23 y.o. to legally own it). If an Uzi semi-auto carbine, then it's a Maryland-regulated weapon of currently unknown origin.

Shooter was a grad student who used to intern at NASA (Goddard?)

No way this plays well for us, and I don't see how we can "win" with open debates about whether or not it was a banned weapon, a pistol or a carbine, or not, or whatever. Could have played much worse if he went postal on a crowd of college students with the Uzi, instead of 'only' two housemates and self with the original pistol instead.

You can bet the political and media focus will be (at least) on his mental history---especially at the time of purchase of the handgun.

So glad the one housemate survived. Disturbing, still.

    Hi All,

I'm working on this story today (like pretty much everyone in Maryland). I'm trying to find out more about the shooter, Dayvon Maurice Green. So far, all of his professors said that he was an excellent student and they are completely shocked and saddened.

If you know anything, can you please pass the info along? Thank you - as far as they can say, both guns are legal and there is not much else they can say without speculation.
