I feel weird posting this up on this forum, especially with how new I am on here, but does anyone know anyone hiring?

My previous job was a management job with the carroll county gov't (worked at Piney Run Park as Maintenance and Staff supervisor). Basically it was a 95% customer service job where I directly managed 17 others.

I'm finishing up my BA from UMBC in sociology. I've been looking for jobs in Marketing, Sales, health care, basically anything customer service oriented with decent pay. I quit my previous job with the county because of flexibility issues between working a required 40 hours a week with not too many hours to choose from to make up time) and school (trying to finish school ASAP).

So...anyone hear anything from the grapevine? I've got my resume up on careerbuilder and monster and have been sending it out a bunch, but we all know if you know someone who knows someone it's much easier to get a foot in the door rather than just being another 3 page resume on the desk.

thanks ahead of time for anything guys

Check craigslist and emphasize your management skills. I'm sorry to say that a degree in sociology isn't worth much unless you get a masters to compliment it. Focus on your business skills and management experience; that will help you out more.

    I know how you feel.
I worked for a hand tool company for more than twenty two years. The company merged with a competitor and closed our warehouse in Hanover last December.
I was what amounts to an hourly paid supervisor.
I have only had two interviews since then. One did come via Career Builder, but did not get a second interview. That job would have been perfect. Almost the same type of work and less than five miles from home.

If your GPA will be 3.45 or higher, go to www.usajobs.gov and search on the OUTSTANDING SCHOLAR program. The feds will hire people with a high GPA and then train you in a job even if your major does not support it. For example, even though your degree does not apply to it, you might be offered an entry level job as an air traffic controller or computer programmer. They figure that if you are smart enough to get a high GPA then you are smart enough to be trained. Also, because my former employer, SSA, is so ginormous, they have their own programs and hiring authority. Because of that, you need to visit them personally and fill out paperwork with them separately.

Good luck and although some may make fun of applying for a job with the government, I say screw them unless they are willing to pay your bills for you until THEY find you a so-called "better" job.

What geographic area are you looking in?
prefereably within 30 miles from finksburg (Carroll County), so it could be baltimore county to frederick, but depending on the job that will obviously vary.

    Hows your building material knowledge?
actually fairly well, at the park I was doing a lot of construction projects (decks, renovating interior/exterior, that kind of stuff)

Male escort industry needs some help. :D
haha well that will obviously be the side job

As someone who has a B.A. in Sociology, I can Rusty is right. You need a complimentary skill.

I work in IT support right now.

I approach the job interviews this way:

I have 6 years IT experience doing Tier 2/3 troubleshooting and am A+ certified, this gives me the technical knowledge to be successful in the job. My sociology degree gives me insight into how people interact and helps me provide better customer service and work efficiently within the organization.

All the computer science degrees involved math, and since I still add on my fingers, I decided level 2 calculus would be a bad idea.

I kind of wish I had done psych though. It might make more sense.
