    My wife inherented an Iver Johnnson Arms & cycle top break 22 from her grandfather.

    From some internet searches I think it is a 2nd model 1897-1908
    DOUBLE-POST top latch; leaf springs;
    cylinder "free-wheeling" when at rest

    The patent # on the band is worn off. the serial # 28372. The gun finish is worn off and was handled a lot but it all works.
    I have not shot it yet and from what I read will problably not shoot it.
    Is there anyway to bring the patent # up so they can be read?

    Thanks

    I have basically the same firearm but it's made by H&R in .38SW. Mine has the serial number under the right grip plus on the bottom of the frame.

    I've shot it quite a bit since I was a kid and it was my grandfather's. Not accurate at all but fun to shoot.

    Sounds like it may need a new cylinder bolt.
    I don't think it's meant to "free wheel when at rest". :confused:

    3rd model does not free wheel and has a coil spring for the hammer. The second model cylinder free wheels. As per the research I read.
