I’d swap out the stock without any concern but only to make it more practical for its intended use. If it was about concern for the wood getting damaged then Id also be worried about the blue so I would just use a different gun. Like you my guns are tools except for a couple that get shot but very gentle use.

for thinking about swapping out the walnut stock on my trusty old Remington 700 BDL 30-06 for a Hogue overmolded one?

yeah thanks you make a lot of sense. been staring at this rifle all week and don't think I really want to change it, it's been with me for 40 years. I may take another option.

This thread got me to looking if I could use my Remington 700 30-06 as a long range rifle so I started looking for stock replacements/conversions. I was really surprised to see "tactical" style replacement stuff was running close to $1k. At that point, I would just build an AR-10. Good call on just getting another rifle. Always room for just one more!
