Because it uses the same mags as your (I assume) 5.56 upper, come up with a system to clearly label your 300 mags. You can close the bolt on your 5.56 and fire the gun. Once.

I found some cheap rubber bands that I keep on any mag loaded with 300, and my 300 upper is very different than any of my other 5.56 uppers.

There are lots of ways to do it, but find something that works for you and do it every time.

I keep seeing and reading this.

Will this shoot? It's loaded to 1.979, pretty short as 300 AAC goes. Maybe later I'll load some dummies to see if normal cycling will set this bullet back enough to meet head space requirements.

    If I'm reading correctly, it's a 16" barrel, so it doesn't matter.

EDIT: Pistol gas though? Seems like a weird setup...

They are referring to the gas system length. 300 BLK runs best on a pistol length gas system, not the carbine length gas system. Mine is running a pistol length gas system and will cycle supers and subs without a problem. Some carbine length gas systems will have problems cycling subs without a suppressor mounted, due to insufficient pressure in the gas system to cycle the AR bolt.

So I guess that's why people suggested I go with 300 AAC on my shorty AR pistol.

Even then if there isn't enough dwell time of the bullet in the bore after the gas port, you won't be able to get sufficient pressure in the gas system to reliably cycle subs, without a suppressor. If the gas port is large enough or have an adjustable gas block, you can cycle subs without an issue.

Chambering a .300 in .223 doesn't happen often, but it does happen. If your crimp isn't tight, or if somebody gives the forward assist a good whack, well, things can get interesting. Painting the .300 mags a different color, or using the rubber bands, seems like a reasonable step.
