I'm kind of a novice when it comes to gunsmithing, but I'm learning a few tricks as I go along. I have a 1911 gov't and I would like to put a commander length slide and barrel on my frame. Does anyone know what is involved in this proccess or is it as easy as swapping the parts? Any help would be much apreciated.

it looks like a commander frame is a little shorter than the gov't frame. is this true?

That is correct. The commander dust cover is shorter on the frame but the grip is full size. Mating the frame to theslide really is not difficult. You need to get the correct recoil spring for proper function. Not just a drop in item. Someone knowledgeable in 1911s should do the job, it's not a plug and play.
