Anyone have a good feel for a reasonable to be paid for a Vertterli Model 1878 in 10.4x42R? I believe it's a short rifle, as the barrel is said to be 33" but someone will correct me if I'm wrong. All numbers match, bore is excellent, stock is very good with a boxed "D5+CI".

I have what I believe is a 1870/87 with the 10.4mm 5 box mag. Not sure what its worth, but its 100% matching incl the beautiful stock with 1888 dated seal in the stock also.

Go to swiss rifles.com they have all the info for models and specs.

Value as normal depends on condition. I have one, they have to be converted to center fire as ammo has not been made since the1930s.
The conversion is not hard and making ammo is somewhat easy.
Somewhere between 250 to 350 is normal price if it is in good original shape, and has cleaning rod.

They are a hoot to shoot.

Has the cleaning rod is key. No cleaning rod it's a $200 gun at best. Ammo is insanely expensive.

A search of completed GB sales shows anything from $250 - $410.

The reason I'm axing is that I purchased a lot of 5 Swiss rifles today. Instant collection, sort of. I need a M1889 and a M1911 to complete the collection and I am going to sell everything else. My friend tells me me that I will regret selling the Vetterli.

I bought one and paid $400 for it, but there was no shipping charge, so I figured it at about $375. The rifle was in excellent condition, and was manufactured in Bern. I bought it in New Bern, NC, so I was being a bit sentimental. I've seen them at recent shows for as low as $275, but they were a bit dogged out. Sometimes a specific gun just calls to you, and you have to think what it should be worth in 5 years, or so. I'll always go a bit high for an excellent example.
