People are suggesting AK pistols, which are legal. Which you can then, again legally, add a stablizing brace to and have a carbine-like platform.
That said, I'd still opt for the Sig.
Another Sig 556R vote. The xi Russian has nice improvements over the R but I just haven't heard too many real world reports about it yet.
If the xi turns out to be gremlin free, that'd be a good way to go.
If you want an actual authentic AK it's still possible, just have to buy it as a pistol or SBR.

The standard 556xi is chrome lined, so I'd assume the 7.62 model is too.

Since the Gen II mags I've loved my AR in 7.62x39. I love it much more than the AR's in 5.56. I went with an SS SOTA upper on a Aero Precision lower. The only complaint i've had is with the older mags. The followers and springs weren't worth a darn. Here are the mags I use now.
Sig 556 family: Cheek riser comes off. It can be fired when folded.
