I don't have one and have not shot one. I am leary of anything now coming from Remington and have doubts that anything today can outshine a Beretta.

So my dad grew up shooting, and wants a shotgun, He wants this bad, I am interested in any reviews people come up with. Also why is this special? It does stuff pump actions have done for a long time. Have there not been semi autos that fire all 3 shell lengths?

Curious about this firearm myself. If it lives up to the hype it's gonna be my shtf shotgun. I'm also curious if it'll cycle those mini buck loads.

It's not that they have not fired all three shell lengths before. It is the fact that it reduces the recoil by only using a certain amount of gas ports to effectively cycle the round. As in if you shoot a 2 3/4 it would use more gas ports to eject that shell. The longer the shell the less gas ports needed. This way you can effeciently shoot all lengths.

I have shot both the Versamax and Xtrema II, I love Remington but honestly for the price I would go with the Beretta. They both are doing the same job but the Xtrema has been around longer and are usually found a bit cheaper. But thats just my .02

Just noticed today in the royal washroom, I grabbed a some month 2011 Guns and Ammo and there was a recall for the Remington Versamax for out of spec hammers. Warnings of do not shoot, contact Remington ASAP. I don't know if the problems have been resolved, I don't own one, but FWIW, do your research before buying one first, make sure it isn't one of the defective ones.

Last October I was looking for a semi-auto for my son and since I am a lifelong Remington owner I thought the VersaMax looked promising. I was pretty sure that this was going to be the gun for him until I had one in my hands and cycled the action. It felt like a low quality toy. The action was rough and clunky and the gun is ugly even for a synthetic model.

We ended up with a Winchester SX3 for about $200 less than the Versamax. There are several proven guns available for the same or less money.

Talked to a buddy about this gun. If what he says is right don't buy it. The new owners of Remington are using its name to make money. The guns are heading to sub par. Know of one guy who is on his 3rd barrel for his Versamax. The other 2 split up the bottom. Sounds like they are making the barrels around a mandrel rather than hammer forging them. Check it out very closely. I remember Winchester going this way in the late 70s and they recovered, but I am very disappointed knowing Remington is following suite.
