If you're going with a piston gun my votes go to LWRC, PWS, and POF. The Patriot Ordinance definitely has the flash, but its heavy. While I truly enjoy shooting the LWRC, you've got to handle a PWS. It's extremely light and natural pointing for a piston gun, and the build quality/finish is amazing. I think its my favorite AR of the bunch.

oh shit, I forgot about the REPR.

    But he wants a 5.56

    Still, GO WITH THE REPR

LOL great gun but I am more of a fan of DI Ars. I have had issues with Pistons in the past and I'm not a gun smith. When shit breaks, those proprietary parts become not only hard to find but are also hard to afford. Besides, if I was going to get something that expensive I would just get a Scar 17. Does Noveske make a Maryland legal 16" Rifle in 556?

Or get a Colt and a Geissele trigger and a nice BCM free float upper and still be on budget. That way you have 2 configurations to run. OR Engage or Mark at Precision and build one just how you want it.

2K? Proceed to Engage, purchase KAC SR-15E3. Lightweight MD legal DI.

This is my suggestion also. I have a MOD 1. A KAC SR15 LPR would be with be another one to look at.

Also check out Precision Firearms. A friend has a SPR style rifle with a Bartlein cut rifle barrel and shoots bugholes.

Personally I would go to Engage and let them build you a custom rifle.

Second on Engage ! They Rock !

This seems to be a popular suggesion. A lot of people recomend them here. I might have to pay them a visit.

I know I'm not supposed to say this but if I had two grand to spend and had no AR..........I would buy a Colt (who are probably going to sell you a better and milspec rifle for 800 bucks than some alphabet company's overpriced parts gun that costs twice as much), get a Giesselle trigger for it, and use the remaining grand to buy myself a nice real WW2-made M1 Carbine (which are climbing in value rapidly and soon to be out of reach for many I fear).

And as others have said, Andy's rifles at Engage are awesome too and worth every penny.

But if I blew my two grand on an alphabet company rifle I would cry myself to sleep.

    Just my .02.

I bought two E4's from Engage and would Trust My Life with either one !

Gotta go with the crowd. Go to engage and get a rifle built just as you want it.

I suggest a Nitrided barrel in a twist that suits your preferred projectiles. 1/8 seems to be a crowd pleaser, but myself I almost always opt for 1/9 because all I ever shoot is 62 grain and under

Engage SBR with suppressor. Go big or go home.

Engage. Bought my first AR from them and would highly highly recommend them

    Another vote for engage

2K? Proceed to Engage, purchase KAC SR-15E3. Lightweight MD legal DI.

    That's about a perfect idea.

    Are we there yet?;)

Buy a Colt HBAR Carbine and put a Geissele in it. Colt barrels often shoot VERY well.

My Classes show people how often Boutique Rifles fail tests and gauging.

Colt has done some silly things with ARs in the past ,but Colt does the AR right.

    OP:

I own 3 ARs. All three are Colt's.

    R6601 (1:7 twist)
    AR6721 (1:9 twist)
    LE6920 (1:7 twist)

All three are 'shooters' and are very accurate.
I've never had any sort of problem with any of them.

The only one that can't be bought in Maryland now, is the 6920.

    I'll ask you one question...........

You state that your budget is $2k.

Do you want a $2k rifle for the 'bling' factor, or, do you want a shooter that costs about $1k and have some $$$$ left over for ammo???
(With that $1k, you can get a LOT of ammo.)

You know I really thought about getting that, I honestly did. I shot a MOD1 of these a while back and I swear it is the flattest shooting mid length gas rifle I have ever ran. My only knock against it is that they have quite a few proprietary parts on them including the bcg. I understand it is proven to last 20k plus rounds. That being said, the whole point of me having a DI is that the parts are cheap and easy to find. In a shit hits the fan scenario I could always snag a bcg from so $500 rifle laying around, put it in and be good to go. My bcg goes out on that thing, I had better hope KAC hasn't gone out of business. Plus don't you need some $130 dollar tool to remove the rail and the gun doesn't come with it?

Either KAC, or if you're hung up on prop parts, go to engage and hand pick every component you want.

If you're looking for off the shelf complete and KACs not it, go colt.

A Windham Dissipator is a nice Carbine too.

Build it yourself! It's very easy. YouTube has multiple videos on how to do it. Use the extra $$$ to buy ammo. Or a Glock!

A lot of good advice, especially these above.

Question, will this be your 'one rifle' for SHTF and everything else, or is this more of a backup, SHTF rifle that you want to have a little bling on?

Does it have to be 5.56, or would you consider another caliber?

Also, consider a 300BLK pistol, DD makes a great one, and it's very reasonably priced, you could upgrade a few parts and keep the stock parts as spares. Have your cake and eat it too.
