One would not carry a loaded weapon while instructing a class. The only time one would have a loaded weapon is at the range making sure it's either holstered, muzzle pointed in a safe direction or when shooting. If MSP issues Wear & Carry permits to Instructors it most likely will lean more towards transport/financial end. Chris

There isn't any law that you can't carry while teaching a class, even the lecture portion. If it's an NRA class, however, its NRA policy for no live ammo to be in the classroom. But that doesnt carry the weight of the law.

    And the problem is........?

no problem at all. Its easy to throw a gun in the trunk.
You had mentioned that the gun on your hip might count as your transported gun so as to stay within the exception. its just not the way the MSP sees it.

This is not the way the MSP sees it as per one instructor. As with every other restriction I would be willing to bet that Knaub won't put that in writing.

It's cool boss, you do you. I'm acting on info I trust. Keeping a spare AR in the trunk isn't a bad idea anyway...

The pre-req is NRA Basic Pistol. You have to take the class before you can take the class to instruct the class.
    Thanks, kinda figured that.....

I'm schedule to train (8 hr renewal) later this month. So sick of the hoop jumping.

Timing is always the issue. Can't make these dates. More soon?

some other nearby NRA Basic Pistol Instructor classes. Some are not co-scheduled with BIT (Basic Instructor Training), some are. If they aren't you have to find a BIT class prior to the instructor class. Ben usually has his co-scheduled.

If you have taken NRA Basic Pistol, I highly recommend taking the BIT and Pistol Instructor class from Ben and not waiting for a later date.

I used to use this reasoning, but one of my instructor friends was told by the MSP that you must be transporting at least one other gun besides your carry piece.
I almost always carry two anyway. ;)

And there's the rub. Doesn't matter much what licensing division's "intent" was with the restriction if the trooper picking you up feels it reads another (stricter) way. Ambiguity and wiggle room be damned!

I'd love to take this course, but in the summer I would have to crack that ole time space continuum thing to pull off the timing.

Didn't say that it was a"law" but it's about safety. Live ammo in a class room environment is a big No No where I come from. How many times after seen an Instructor cook off a round in the classroom without thinking. I mainly teach beginners so safety is highly stressed and as an Instructor I set the example. Go so far that when firearms are in the class room they are cleared by two Instructors and No live ammo is allowed, bright plastic dummy rounds only. Now with that said once everybody is cleared to go to live fire then off to the range where safety is number one again. Chris
