For all you lawyers, legal eagles out there. What would it take for a school system to obtain Md Special Police status for armed security personel? Could it be done?

Yeah, this isn't a simple issue. I know here in Howard County we have several "Resource Officers" around the school system, but they are actually Howard County Police Officers. I seriously doubt any "lawyer" or "legal eagle" will have an answer to your question off the top of their head. I know I don't.

It's not hard but rather costly.

And at the end of the day that is what it's about.

Communities have SPO's...Stores have them....Community Colleges even have them.

Salary, liability insurance, vehicles, equipment, health insurance, retirement, etc all play a role into why it wont happen.

I believe Baltimore City School Police at one time were SPO's.

I ask this because the way I read the code, as a novice, it seems the superintendent could request this designation from the gov., send employees to the required training, and them implement. If the employee are presently in the county system no additional benifits etc needed, just an addition to duties.

Shopping malls have had special police, I believe that's how most community colleges do it. Seems to me if a group of teachers I'd the training and the county got the request from the gov successfully all of a sudden there would be a larger police presence in the school.

Maybe I'm being to simpe, ........TD

    Yes very simple thinking.

There is training cost, equipment, MD mandates certification of SPO's, pay increase, liability etc.
