    My recommendation is Glock.
My second recommendation is go to the Frederick Gun show this weekend and see what you like bestest.

I'm going to throw one out of left-field, a Browning Hi-Power in 9mm. May not be one you'd think about buying, but I can almost guarantee you'll enjoy shooting one - they fit just about everyone like a glove, one of John Browning's masterpieces IMO.

Glock G19. M&P 9 full-size (with small grip panel). Sig 320 (again, small grip panel). There's a few out there that'd suit you well - it's just a matter of getting some time in with them and seeing which fits you best.

Is the Frederick one better than the one in Timonium?

I won't comment on which show is better as I'm
friends with both promoters and I work both shows.

BUT......if I was in charge of deciding where my $8 was going it would be Frederick. I think it's a nicer venue and a nicer area.

Also firearms industry pro tip. Most vendors work both shows so one could buy a pistol and submit paperwork Saturday at Frederick and pick up at Timonium (subject to vendors discretion).

I recommend buying at Blue Fins (although in the interest of transparency) they do pay me and give me snacks. And Jamie pats my head and says good boy when I make a sale.

Although i like the Glock 19 and carried one for many years when I worked in NYC and DC, I suggest you start off with a revolver. It's really hard to make them jam, and contact shots don't make them stop working. You dont have to pull the trigger to take it apart and clean it, and you really have to try hard to have an accidental/negligent discharge.

While there's some sage advice here, I would recommend a pistol similar to what you have. The Beretta Cheetah comes to mind and, as already mentioned, the Bersa Thunder.

I would also suggest a revolver as well. South Carroll Sporting Goods has a few Smith and Wesson model 64 police trade in's and a nice vintage model 36 revolver.

Go to a range that rents guns and hold several different ones in the caliber you prefer (probably 380 or 9mm). See which one/s fit your hands the best and start there, that is a key to shooting well with a pistol, especially for a lady with smaller hands. ;)

+100 on this. I have trained hundreds of women over the years and they need to feel comfortable with what they shoot unlike men who will shoot anything.

If money is an issue, CDNN Investments has been getting Glock, S&W M&P, Beretta and Sig turn ins and they are selling for reasonable prices.

Try before you buy for sure though.

    Don't forget about:
Sccy CPX-2, 9mm in any color for around $250
    Ruger LCP, .380, $199

Just to give a couple of smaller and low cost options.

Personally I'm getting a Sccy next week. Anyone here is welcome to try it out! Good luck on your hunt. Who knows, maybe I'll like it more than my Sig ;D

I definitely agree with the recommendation to rent several different types of handguns at a range before you buy one that feels right to you. But you might need some help in figuring out what handguns you might even want to try. That's where this suggestion comes in. You might want to go over to Worth-a-Shot in Severn (near Fort Meade) and talk to the Manager there. I believe her name is Donna and she is quite petite. But she is extremely knowledgeable about firearms and is bound to give you some great advice because she is probably the same size as you are. They also have hold training classes there and I would definitely recommend taking the Basic NRA Handgun course. It will teach you how to safely use and clean your handgun. Worth-a-Shot also sells firearms, but I think that you can do better pricewise by buying from one of the Industry Partners on this forum. Just keep in mind that a Glock or Sig that you see at Worth-a-Shot is identical to a Glock or Sig that you will get at one of the IP's. So resist the pressure to buy at Worth-a-Shot until you have done your homework.

I was in the same boat as you are about 5 years ago, and with the help of people on this Forum as well as Donna at Worth-a-Shot, I feel like I am a much more educated and responsible gun owner now. Best of luck.

Forget the 380. IMO, it has become obsolete due to the current crop of small 9mm's now available. The ammo is generally lower priced and has more options for different types of usage.Trying different models is a great suggestion. One I would highly recommend is a Sig P239 in 9mm. Good luck.

If you like shooting .380, you can't go wrong with a Bersa Thunder 380. It's affordable, reliable, and it breaks down into three pieces.

    Good advice, most all.

Have to ask, what's your primary purposes, home defense, plinking, competition, W&C?

If unsure, get a Ruger GP100 in .22LR; shoot it often for several months, before you decide on another gun.

    Good luck, and happy shooting!

I'm a member at FreeState. Typically, I shoot on Mondays or Tuesdays. I have a Bersa 380 and a Glock 19 (among many others). If you want to coordinate something, I'd be glad to let you try them.
