My father bought this Western Field M550AB at a gun show in 1978. It was unused but may have been several years old at the time. Western Field was a Montgomery Ward house brand produced by Mossberg. It is essentially a Mossberg 500.
He gave it to me ~15 years ago and it has been largely unused in that time. It was last used regularly in the late 70s. Recently I became interested in it again and took it out to clean it and make sure all was well. My wife tried it, liked it, and then shot the remainder of the shells that I had on hand.
My wife has long said that it was too heavy and unwieldy for her to use as a home defense gun. With that in mind I decided to update it to something more suited for that purpose. The change is dramatic - it completely changes the character of the gun. It’s over a foot shorter and nearly two and a half pounds lighter.
Before and after pics as well as some basic comparison info are below.
Before:
Overall length: 50 1/4”
Barrel: 30”
Length of Pull: 14 7/8”
Weight: 9 lbs
After:
Overall Length: 38"
Barrel: 18.5:
Length of Pull: 13 3/4"
Weight 6.6 lbs
