In today's Washington Post (WaPo, Commie Post or ComPost) is an "analysis" of gun sales and violent crime spikes https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2020/07/15/gun-sales-jump-protests-coronavirus/. It's a crock of BS from any cursory reading and thought. The author of the piece at least offers a disclaimer of the Brookings Institute study by stating "The authors caution that a study of this nature cannot prove causality, particularly at a time of massive social upheaval in a country dealing with an unprecedented public health crisis as well as a nationwide protest movement."
The apparent conclusion that the rise in firearms purchases and racial animus is behind the spike in violent crime is spurious...the rise in firearms purchases are a reaction to the spike in violent crime and civil unrest. When people feel threatened...whether conservative or liberal...they look for ways to defend themselves when law enforcement is either occupied elsewhere or retrenching due to political orders.
Nowhere...nowhere...has there been any reports I've seen that anyone going out and buying defensive firearms has been going out and committing crimes with those firearms. The firearms being purchased are defensive in nature and are being held in reserve just in case they're needed.
I'm certain that the firearms used in the spikes in crime were and are existing firearms...whether obtained legally or illegally...and I suspect illegally is the most likely source for them.
While I don't expect much in the way of accuracy from the ComPost this is simply a hit job to support the Post's longtime animus towards firearms and firearms owners in general much less an honest and objective analysis.
The tagline on the Post's front page under their banner is "Democracy Dies in Darkness". What they don't say is that it's the Post itself that brings the darkness.
Rant over...carry on.
