I have built a half dozen lowers with no special tools except a castle nut wrench and a couple punches. Definitely not necessary

Its not needed to put together a lower but sure is helpful. Especially for tightening the castle nut. You can get them as sets too. One for the upper, one for the lower. If you plan on putting together an upper you definitely need one for it. Im a firm believer in using the correct tools.

Depending on where youre located Im sure someone would loan you one.

Good point. I would like to assemble an upper at some point.

I used one. Maybe I could have done it without but I only paid 10 bucks for it.

You can use a magazine to hold it in a vise once you install the mag release.

The real reason a vice block is recommended when assembling a lower is for the installation of the castle nut. When tightening the castle nut a vice block is needed in order to get the proper torque.

Everything else can be done when using a magazing to hold the lower in the vice. But I wouldn't use a mag when tightening the castle nut.

I built a couple without one. I didn't find it too terribly difficult but I don't have the experience to compare building with one. I can imagine carving one out of a 2X4 block if I wanted one.
