    The GC's have cracked stocks..

The SOGs don't look too bad. I want to get some descent ones.

    $94 for 3 seems like a deal.

The first one I received from SOG was alright for the most part. My only issue was the amount of rust/pitting on the bolt head. I've gotten it cleaned up as much as I can and will post pics in the morning. I'm interested in seeing what the second one I ordered will look like.

As promised, pictures :D As I mentioned before, the bolt (non matching sadly) head was the biggest issue I've had with this one, what you see is the end result of soaking it in CLP and scrubbing it down with a brass brush. The only real issue with the stock are the marks where other M53s were stacked on it, there's a crater in the right side under the bolt from another bolt handle, and an imprint on the left side from a rear sight button. What's the deal with the boxed 296 on the receiver? And does the 1953.12 beneath it mean the month and year it was produced?

the 296 marking is the factory marking.

you are correct, 1953.12 is the year and month, so december of 1953.

that being a 1953 rifle, those are a little more uncommon than a 54 or 55, and its interesting because unlike other years of production, the 1953's and some early 1954 rifles are not actually marked as being a "type 53", there is no model designation on your rifle.

instead there is a little chinese character after the serial number that roughly translated means something like sample or trial.

the first 60,000 or so t53's were marked this way as a sort of trial run before they cranked up major production.

also in 1954 the factory marking was changed to a 26 instead of 296.

Here is the T53 that I received from SOG last week. The bore cleaned up very nicely. I'm satisfied, but I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet.

Just dug The Old Man's Type 53 out of the over-flow safe. Factory 296. 10th month of 1954. All matching numbers except for the butt plate. It's an old Navy Arms import that he picked up from an ad in the Gaithersburg Gazette for the princely sum of 40-bucks, IIRC.

I'll have to post up some pics tomorrow.
