Turkey anyone?
These guys were in my woods fattening up. I can't wait till the season starts.
This is from last year, but.... that's a lot of turkey.
Grant,
Now that they have fancy electronic calls, anyone can be a great turkey hunter.
Good luck to you.
That is a hell of a lot of turkeys. I saw more in Patuxent during early ML than I’ve ever seen. I had 3 Toms and a Jake run across my back path. First one stopped 30yds away and stared at me for a few seconds before it took off (the rest ran across and kept going). Biggest damn Tom I’ve ever seen and I had the sucker dead to rights. Made me really sad I couldn’t take the guy. Oh well. Makes me hopeful for winter and spring seasons. I just have to figure out how to hunt them in the winter. I might try crossbow hunting them for winter. Let’s me have the option of deer or turkey. I’ve run across more herds of deer at close range at that point in january then I have turkey.
But from 8-10 and 1-6 I was hearing turkeys cutting ALL over the park. Plus saw that one group up close and probably 5-6 singletons on the ground or taking off from a roost. I guess maybe a really mild winter helped flock recruitment?
This is from last year, but.... that's a lot of turkey.
Darn! Where is that located?
Take the whole flock with a Claymore.
That is nuts, I just went out today for opening day for Fall season, hunting public land, didn't see a single bird or any signs of them either. Was at Belle Grove WMA, Woodmont NRMA and Indian Springs WMA. They must move farther south into Green Ridge State Forest during the fall. Any tips on locating a public land bird?
I mostly hit areas I’ve seen them before. So far I am 1 for 2 in the winter in an area of Patuxent I’ve seen them before in the fall deer season. Didn’t connect, but I did knock them out of their roost around maybe 8am. They must come down from their roost much later in the day during the winter.
Patuxent seems to have a fair number. I didn’t manage to call one in in the spring 2 years ago, but one of the guys out hunting did and I had birds responding to me. They just wouldn’t commit.
I have my fingers crossed for this winter/spring. That said, I know it is a stretch, but still hoping for someone to give me pointers during this spring season. Mostly needing pointers on calling (improving, when, what, etc.)
Instant turkey spray!
Lazarus,
What part of MD are in you? I would be willing to team up in the spring if you are interested and close to the Frederick area. I am still learning myself, but i have done a ton of research of spring Gobbler hunting.
