I've been reading several threads that seem to hypothesize on what would happen if MD was a shall issue state. The general consensus was that there are many residents that have not yet applied (for various reasons such as being officially denied, cost of the application, etc) but would under a more reasonable policy.
This got me thinking about how to get some form of metric on this that could be used to counter the MSP statistics. During some of the discussions on the current Woollard vs State of Maryland case, there was a reference to the percentage of the Texas population that have permits (I believe the number quoted was 1.8%) and tried to extrapolate this to our 5.7 Million population. That would mean over 103,000 permits (MD currently has ~43,000 permits). Maybe another good way, at least initially, for us to get a handle on this is to determine how many of us that do not have a MD permit have a non-resident license from another state, such as Florida, Virginia, or Utah? At a minimum, these individuals most likely would be first in line should the climate in MD change in the future.
I am composing letters to be sent to the issuing authorities in those states that are more likely to be of interest to us to see how many licenses have been issued to Maryland residents. So that I can get a reasonable list of states to query, I would appreciate hearing from you as to which states you have non-resident licenses from.
Since some members may hold multiple licenses, I've started a poll to get an idea of how the distribution may look like. This will help to evaluate the non-resident statistics when I get them.
I'll post the results when I get them.
