My uncle has a gun stuck at a non 8 day releasing FFL. Since he just filled out his paperwork last week there is no way he is getting it prior to Oct 1. I talked to him and explained the HQL stuff post Oct 1 and he then went to his dealer to ask for a transfer to an 8 day releasing shop. The FFL stated that he was unsure about doing this because there would then be 2 sets of paperwork on the gun. My answer was so what? The gun should be marked out of the original shops books and into the new shop and then new paperwork filled out. The gun isn't changing registrants so the worst thing is that it gets registered twice. Is there any reason the FFL cannot transfer since he has already sent in the paperwork? Thanks

My understanding is, you don't have to take possesion before 10/1. Your dad should be safe, just wait.

Wrong, there are several threads that point out that if you take possession after Oct 1, you NEED an HQL. And this comes from MSP and AG office.

The big question is why anyone who comes to this board would let a family member buy from a non-8 day release dealer.

We don't exactly live near each other. Apparently it was some FFL that a guy he knows recommended.

OP just said gun. Not pistol. If it's a long gun, wait it out, it's not worth the fees. If it's a pistol, the HQL applies and the transfer costs about the same and you get your gun sooner.

Make sure you meet the criteria for release from the FFL you transfer to. They are all a little different

don't know who (ffl) said it in the forum.. the current ffl can retract/cancel that application. then transfer the said handgun to another ffl and start a new app.
