Ah, OK. I thought that applied only to SBR's.
Yup, SBRs fall under this category.

    (2) “Copycat weapon” does not include an assault long gun or an assault pistol. E) ANY Semi-Automatic Centerfire Rifle not grandfathered prior to 10/1/2013 that has an Overall Length shorter than 29.00 is BANNED in the State of Maryland.

I'd have to dig up all the language from SB 281 . But too lazy at the moment. Oversimplified version :

    SB 281 ( aka FSA2013 ) Banned a buncha stuff , thru 3 mechanisms :

List of things by name .

" Copycats " - Scary guns meeting certain fine print in relation to Named Guns .

" Assault Long Guns " - A lot of other fine print to ban anything scary looking , that didn't quite fit the previous mountain of fine print .

Of interest to MDS , this is where the infamous :

    Semiauto
    Centerfire

    Must be > 29.0 inch OAL .

Thankfully IWI was nice enough to stick a slightly longer muzzle brake on for those of us stuck in this state.

The criteria is actually the caliber applied to the classification of type or category as stipulated. In this case those guns that are banned, there is no cross correlation, application by design or interchangeable parts specific to this rifle versus those not allowed. Therefore, the Tavor meets the acceptable criteria at the present time. Simple.
