Is anyone familiar with target shooting on private property? I have a friend that has about 100 acres in Montgomery County and I want to find out if it is legal to target shoot on his land. It is hard to find clear legal information on this topic online. Any pointers would be great.

    Thanks!

    Montgomery County
First: what PART of Montgomery County?

    Second: shooting what?

Third: on what part of that 100 acres, relative to roads, nearby structures, etc.?

This being Maryland, the clear legal pointers will be a lot easier to address/provide if the context and details are on the table. Because, Maryland (and MoCo, as frosting on that nasty cake).

This would be in Boyds and we'd be shooting steel targets. If there is a caliber or firearm restriction I would want to know that as well. The targets would have a berm behind them and they would be 150 yards from any home or road. Sort of like an outdoor range. Because this is MD I'm very hesitant to even do this unless I'm absolutely convinced it is legal.

Even though I can shoot on my property without any “permission “ I did decide to set up a certified range. I would not contact the range committee unless he wanted to do that. The link I posted up thread will get him started.

Boyd's is good to go. Make sure you have a good backstop.
I have actually hunted deer in the middle of Boyds.

Good luck to you and your friend.

Friends of mine have their own range outside of town. Even though they did not have to, they did go through the county to have it "approved".

I will be out there mañana.
