I have a friend in Pasadena who very successfully traps them with a havaheart and relocates them a good distance away. You will never eliminate them but once you get the population in line with the available food source they should leave your other stuff alone. I would also think chipmunks or mice so maybe try the larger trap and a smaller one as well.
