At the Jarretsville Gun Show , I * Finally * picked up a copy of the standard reference work , Standard Catalog of S&W , 3rd Edition .

So for any curiosity of model variations , dates , s/n ranges , etc , start a thread in Handguns , C&R , Antiques , etc , and I'll see it as I cruise the " check new posts " periodically .

Yes .

My understanding from the serious S&W collectors is that the 4 th has some very specilised info , but that one still needs a 3rd Edition also , for the comprehensive overall coverage .

I've only got 1 and 2.
What additional stuff is in 3 that I'd find essential?

I dunno . I only flipped thru 2nd standing in the bookstore . Not common in book stores , and never quite pulled the trigger to order one .

The later editions are evolutions of prior editions that build on, refine and correct information from the earlier ones.They also add information on the newer models. I've used them for years. Great reference books and fun to read, although the S&W forum will amaze you with the body of knowledge that exists there.
