I am looking for a high quality, single action army replica gun. I'd like it as close to real in every way other than unable to fire. I do not want a bb or pellet gun. Cap gun is ok. I would like it to chamber dummy rounds.

Any tips, leads, links, or help appreciated!

I think Alec Baldwin has one for sale.

    I jest! (Sorta)

By “not fire” do you mean “action won’t work” or “hammer is missing the firing pin” ?

Do you mean a Non Gun that is relatively realistic ?

Or actual Firearm that is a reasonably close SAA clone ?

I think both of these are the Denix brand. I have researched them and it gets decent reviews but is totally inaccurate when it comes to functionality. Probably though I will end up getting Denix as it seems to be what there is. I was hoping to get a true single action with a properly timed cylinder which "sounds" like a real SAA.

If you watch YouTube reviews of Denix it looks more like a high quality toy gun.

Some of the Italian (functioning) SAAs are very authentic and not all that expensive. Just remove the pin. You’ll have a perfectly behaving, looking, and sounding non-firing SAA.

That is a great idea except this is for my son to play with and do his own "reenactments".

If it was for me, for sure I would just get an Uberti or Pietta and "de-mill" it (of sorts).

It might help if we knew the purpose. Is this for a play?

Is it a requirement that it not be a "real" gun? Because a real gun with the firing pin removed would be the most realistic.

Denix might be your best bet.

Pull the firing pin and plug the barrel. It is easy to do by pouring lead down the barrel with the breach end plugged with a cork. You don't have to plug the whole barrel, just leave an inch so you can't see the plug.

Back in the Good Ol' Days, young boys were given working revolvers to play with, especially to fire off on the Fourth of July.

I am wondering of the legality of doing this and giving it to a minor. It is still a serialized handgun. Not sure if the C&R aspect comes into play. Not considering but curious!

That would hypothetically be the * Antique Aspect *, not C&R . And just a wild guess , but dropping the $$$ for an 1898 or earlier SAA isn't on the table .

    ************************

Correct us here as needed ; but my interpretation of your criteria :

    Looks very close to SAA

Visually and tactile enter and eject something that sort of resembles cartridges .

Be more * Actually Safe * than modern blank firing guns .

Be Legal for unaccompanied youth to use for " Free Form Self Directed Historical Reenactment " . Presumably in concert with his fellow youthful History Buffs ?
( Legal per Federal and State Law anyway , county and local are their own minefield )

And of course , the Youth must have the trust , responsibity , and maturity to use his " prop " only for intended free form Historical Reenactment in suitable locations , and not do anything stupid with it .

    ******************

Additional option not yet mentioned -

Airsoft . Some of them look very realistic , and have " cartidges that somewhat resemble actual cartridges .

They do potentially expell pellets . They do require a degree of safety , but worst case of misuse, close range impact of airsoft pellet is less hazardous than close range blanks .

Or if you can slightly modify the Historical Era by a couple years ( or explain to your Youth that real world people didn't all imeadately replace all their pistols one day in 1873 . They either kept using what they already had , or purchased used/ surplus instead of spending a month's income on an SAA ( or S&W Russian , or equivalent ) .

Starting point replica Cap & Ball revolver . Modify to make make unable to actually fire . Multiple methods , depending on IF , or degree of complexity to reverse .

But not having the legalities of converting Actual Firearm , as the starting point is already " not legally a firearm " .

Uberti has a SAA built as a cap and ball revolver. If I remember correctly, the firing pin is offset in such a way that it cannot set off live rounds if a bored through cylinder were installed. That will certainly satisfy the realistic repro and popping caps, though percussion caps are quite loud and do shoot hot gases forwards.

They won’t take dummy rounds though, unless maybe you have a 3D print a dummy cylinder that is bored through.

This Denix has dummy rounds that take toy caps.

I went ahead with the Denix. There is no way I can go with any gun that shoots anything out of the muzzle.
