I couldn't justify a new thread, "Silly Things Read in Guns & Ammo", but I read this tonight and had a long laugh. cheat sheet: He has a Springfield M1903 made in 1918 with a barrel dated 12-18. You do the math.

Isn't that possible if it was made in December?
Not a Springfield guy so I wouldn't know one way or the other...

oh, I didn't see the link at first - it says the barrel LENGTH is 12 to 18" not that it is DATED 12-18

Zactly. He's asking for value. Says he has a never fired 1903, states the SN (matches to 1918 manufacture) and then says barrel length is 12-18 inches. I wonder whether he has 2 or 5 dogs under his porch.

Please help those of us who don't know much about these understand what's wrong with the listing.

Edit: Wait - is that a hand-drawn serial number??
Edit 2: Barrel is blued. That's incorrect, right?

Maybe it's not as bad as I thought. The photos suck, as does the description. I thought the slide and frame were a mis-match, but maybe not. I'd hardly call it "minty", but it might not be a bad buy if it stays in the range where it is now. (about $850)

Frog lube would make it "very minty".:D

    Yeah, that dude got boned.
Then again, less than 4% were made for the Air Force (4285) and they can be tough to find.
Most (maybe all?) of the Air Force guns were sent to be refurbished in the 70's I believe and got parkerized.
It looks like this one had the slide buffed and re-blued afterwards.
Wrong grips too but that's fixable.
Most AF guns had the barrels replaced at that time too and correctly re-numbered to the frame.

Edit: Wait - is that a hand-drawn serial number??
Edit 2: Barrel is blued. That's incorrect, right?

The Sistema barrels should be blued (really deep, more black color); most then had the chamber polished (except Army guns) so the outside of chamber is bright with the recesses of the S/N being blue.
Of course even the "unpolished" chambers may be bright due to wear & tear.
The right-side slide markings, serial numbers and the 4-digit "rack number" are pantograph engraved, not roll marked so the edges will be a little raggeddy.
There's also a S/N stamped into the back of the frame but you have to pull out the mainspring housing to see it.
The left side "DGFM FMAP" was roll-marked, stamped, or possibly acid-etched - either way it's a much sharper cut than the right side.
Mine's less than 100 S/N's away from that one with the same import mark and it is a uniform grey-green park'd finish (not that this is definitive).
But mine does have sharp engraving on the slide while the GB one is pretty "soft".

Eh, hope the buyer loves it when they get it.

I've seen two Argentine AF Sistemas that looked like they were in the original, untouched, finish. Neither of them had an import mark, so they probably came in early. I'm still kicking myself for not getting one of them, but it seemed like stupid amounts of money at the time.

The rest have all been refinished. Of those, the better ones were brought in by JLD, the company that appears to have imported the one that just sold on GB, and probably the one that SOMD Mustangs has. They brought in guns that had been refinished in Argentina, almost certainly by/for the military (to extend their useful life). Visual evidence suggests that they hand-picked the guns that they imported, so most of them are pretty tight firearms, even though they were refinished.

    yep, mine is JLD
<edit> no it's not, my Aeronautica is actually a CAI St Albans import. My remembry unit got it confused with another Sistema I sold a while back w/JLD mark.
Also the barrel is totally blued, and not numbered</>

You definitely should have grabbed the original-finish gun(s)!

I know I shouldn't do it, but I can't help myself from occasionally sending a message to a gunbroker seller when I see something wacky. I never give information to a seller that will make his/her item more expensive to the bidder/buyer - if you're going to sell something, do your homework before putting it up for auction. Most of the time, I'm correcting errors that make a listing misleading, but every once in a while I just have to just the guy, "WTF?"

    Here's a candidate: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=484144252

So many things I could say here, but here are a few:

    1. A reblued, mismatched Luger for $2,500. Really? Was this kissed by the Kaiser?

    2. "[W]e have not taken it fully apart to check the very small internal pieces like the firing pin."

For real? This is not some $125 Steyr M95 Stutzen carbine. You're asking someone to pony up $2,500 ($1,500 more than FMV, IMO) and you won't take the damn thing apart to find out if the firing pin and other internal parts bear the number "71"? Do you really want to sell anything? Also, the number on that take-down lever looks humped.

    3. "If you have a quality modern firearm you seldom see in most Gun Shops priced with my resale in mind I will probably be interested in it."

So, if I ask for fair market value, we've got a deal since your resale is 175% FMV?

    4. "Buyers beware you should only purchase a firearm from a Licensed FFL Dealer who has large number of positive feedbacks as a 'seller' also be sure the seller has handled multiple items of similar value to the one you are purchasing."

Do I even need to discuss this statement?

    5. "Warranty/Inspection Period: We do not handle, sell, or trade junk. All of our listings are advertised in true form, we take a lot of photos from multiple angles using natural light [FALSE]. . . . I have no reason to mislead you nor do I want angry customers. Sales are final and sold AS IS unless approved by me. We do not offer any inspection periods."

So, I'm the best seller there is because I'm an 01 FFL and, thus, a ninja, I have awesome things, I want you to be happy, but, unfortunately, I won't stand behind my wares.

When I read a 9,000 word listing in which 8,500 of those words extol the seller's virtues and describe all of his terms and conditions, I just move to the next listing. These guys are often more trouble to deal with than they are worth.

    This is "funny" silly:

First person to offer me a Glock with a polished slide will find their email signed up for gay porn to complement their taste in guns.

recently seen on Armslist ad for a Japanese Type 2 rifle...
