I have a west German sig p226 that has a nickel finish. It's an older gun with a lot of rounds through it. The frame rail finish is chipping on it. What type of finish is on the frame? Is this damage something that can be repaired or stripped and refinished? Would it be worthwhile to contact sig about a possible warranty repair?

Maybe I am just not as discerning as you but my beretta has the same sort of issue going on, It's at wear point of the slide. No matter what you do I think its gonna come back. Mine is a Inox finish on the beretta. Not even sure wtf inox is but....

I appreciate your insight. The reason I want to correct this issue is that I'm concerned about the wear getting past the coating and into the metal of the frame. I could be wrong but I think the coating can be replaced, but if the actual frame gets damaged(which it may already be) I have a useless piece of art. On the other hand you could be right and I may be worried about nothing.

I was just getting ready to take pics of my P220 and make basically this same post! Mine isn't nickel though.

There are at least two different coatings. From what I've read anodized frames can be refinished. There is a company called usanodizing.com that will do the job. Sig doesn't repair damage to anodized finishes on frames themselves. If you have an anodized frame see this link for the different phases of damage. http://grayguns.com/guide-to-sig-sauer-pistol-inspection/ I'm posting from my phone, sorry if this link isn't desktop friendly.

I would just keep grease on the rails and affected areas and shoot it. Don't use Hoppes #9 to clean it due to the nickel finish

Throw on some good lube like Gunzilla or the Wilson combat oil or 1911 barel lug grease and you should be good to go...

My LE trade in 220 has a bunch of wear. I keep it greased (removed for photo) I also don't shoot it much anymore. I've read about re-anodizing it but it seems to be a no go. I've wondered about other coatings.

Its normal wear. If you cycle or sholt a gun it will happen. Better lube will minimize wear. Avoid lubes like miltec and using thin lubes like remoil or improper products like wd40.

I've had two firearms coated one by Black-T http://black-t.com/ and one by Mac's Shootin' Irons (KG Guncoat). The only aluminum one was sent to Mac, and had to be sent back because the coating flaked. This was on a .22 LR. Time will tell on the Teflon, but they are super guys to deal with. They also do some work for us coating explosives detectors at work.

That looks like the older Sig factory nickel to me. A friend has a P220 and P228 with that same finish. It's not the most durable finish as you can see but it is aesthetically pleasing.
