Liked it a lot more than I expected. Less recoil than I expected from 30-06 and I figured out the sights real quick. I'm in the fan club now.
They were issued to us in boot camp just because they were heavy to high port. We did end up shooting them just to burn rounds not for quals. We had to qual on the M-16 and 45 APC. Back then we only went to the range 3 times in boot camp. Even then there were about 40% that did not qualify. That meant no boarding party quals, just a slug on the unit.

So it appears the CMP e-store is still down and has been for at least a month. Does anyone know the current prices for rifles and ammo?
I was at the south store in September garand surplus ammo was 400 for 400 rounds and prices for rifles varied from 700 for the worst condition to 1300 for the best with some variation based on manufacturer

I believe he meant Springfield Armory the commercial firm that produces the M1-A, 1911 and other firearms. They used to make the M1 Garand back in the 1980s…very good renditions of them. I had a T-26 they made in 7.62…never should have let it go.
Did they ever get that to run right? I remember when they came out but seem to remember some ops problems due to shortening the gas system.

Mine ran OK but I never did shoot it much. The 7.62 shot like a .30-06 full size...somewhat less weight and shorter barrel probably caused that. If it was in .30-06 I'm sure it would have kicked a good bit harder...probably harder on the action as well.

E Store is down but the prices shown are still valid. You just have to download the forms and just use snail mail and hope FedEx is ready to deliver something to your neighborhood after they ship it out. If there is any problem CMP will call you. They are very helpful and very knowledgeable and they want to send guns to people.

At 9 1/2 lbs. with a gas operated action, M1's are quite mild in the recoil department for a 30-06. I have owned several over the years. Currently have two. Many don't seem to know that Jean Cantius Garand (aka: John C. Garand) was a French Canadian.

There are a few things that some of us think were done right early-on and don't need to be changed much... Garands, Fender Telecasters, M-14s, 1911s to name a few

This thread got me thinking it’s time for me to let go of another one of my best documented, historic Garands as part of round #2 of my (old age) downsizing before my Estate gets to deal with all this stuff. Complete “Unissued condition” CMP SA M1D with complete BII and inspection report/ Data Sheet signed by Scott Duff. I’ll work to list it here in the classified section soon.

I had the same feeling shooting my M1 for the first time--great shooting & rings the steel at 300+ yards, first time out.
