I had fun tonight trying to teach Senator Lee that criminals do now follow laws. That's what makes them criminals. She didn't seem to get it, but was just trying to do something to help. Please Senator, help us: stop passing laws that criminals pay no attention to that only affect those of us who do, the law-abiding. Hey, at least she stopped to talk with us. I'm going to write her another letter now.

Best part of my evening was a full 5 minute conversation with one of the teachers at the rally, who wanted to know what we were not going to comply with. I told her generally about unconstitutional infringement, she asked specifically what was proposed, and I told her a few. None of what I said shocked her, and she said she saw how that would upset us and didn’t make a lot of sense.

She then asked me what I thought about getting “big money” out of politics. I looked at her and calmly said, I’m an NRA member. You’re a teachers union member. Neither of us as individuals has money sufficient to persuade legislators or even get their attention. But we pool our money together with other like-minded people in our respective organizations, and they represent our interests in ways that we could not do individually. She thought about that a second and she totally got it. Of course, I could have also said “and by the way, my NRA-ILA donations are voluntarily while your union dues are compulsory”, but saw no reason to turn a nice conversation sour.

Excellent “sidewalk talk” engaging one of the worst of the feelings-driven legislators!

While I doubt we changed her mind, she at least stopped and allowed us to engage with her. This senator was the only liberal senator who did so. Maybe a seed was planted in her mind.

I had a great time--looking forward to the next time.:party29:

Great work. I try to structure conversations just this way any time I can. She sounds a lot more inclined to at least pretend she was processing what you had to say - alas, for too many it turns out they're far more interested in knowing that a policy, law, or idea makes us mad than whether or not it has any merit or the prospect of any efficacy whatsoever (say, related to crime).

As mentioned by others, a lot of this is just them trolling us, as a sort of sport, with virtue signaling frosting on top, for their own constituency. That you had a not-too-far-gone person to talk to is a rare find. Nice!

While waiting for the Senate to adjourn, we detoured to the historic room in the Statehouse where George Washington resigned his commission as General of the Continental Army.

So apparently saving seats in the judicial committee hearing room is a thing these days ?

I know it is entirely possible Senator Lee's people will likely be able to access our forum somehow, in case this happens before I am able to write to her, I will say thanks Senator Lee for stopping to listen and discuss our concerns with us.

My letter to her hit the mailbox this morning!
