I have an 1873 S&W Schofield, with a pretty low serial number, that I'd like to get more detailed information about. I know that S&W offers a "Firearm History Request" service on their website. They research your weapon and for $50 provide you with a letter of history and authenticity.

Just curious if anyone has used this service?

I haven't yet, but I know plenty of people who have. You'll get back a nice letter from Mr. Jinks telling you, usually, when the gun left the factory and who it was shipped to. Sometimes other info as well, if they've got it on file. S&W keeps pretty good records. I believe that if the gun was a special order, they'll give info on that, too.

I have one for my Model 27. Takes about six weeks or so. Mr. Jinks is the only person who handles the requests and the turnaround time depends on his backlog. And, yes, he signs each one personally in ball point pen.

It's well worth it. I thought it was only $30 for up to three guns but I guess things have changed in the last couple of years. In any case it's still a good deal, especially for a truly vintage piece like you have. Roy Jinks knows more than anyone in the world about S&W history.
