Hey guys, I was looking at J&G Sales and they have some model 64s starting at 229.00 Execellent condition for 249.00
Is the 64 and the 686 basically the same except the 686 is .357?
Is this a good price after I do the transfers and all?

64 is a K Frame stainless version of the Model 10. Fixed sights, .38 Special.

The 686 is the L Frame gun. Stainless as well. Adjustable sights, .357 caliber.

L Frame is heavier than the K Frame.

If you fire +P loads all day you will loosen up a K frame eventually. It is the reason S&W designed the L frame. Cops were having issues with Model 19's and full power .357 ammo. Winchester has a .38 +P+ load that is serious and I am very glad I shot it out of a GP100.

If you are using it for PPC and shooting 158gr SWC, that gun will out last your grand kids.

Both are good guns. What is the use?

I feel a Model 10 or 64 with decent ammo is probably the best gun for most people. Put some speedloaders around the house and learn how to use them.

MikeC. J&G also lists the model 15. What is your thoughts on that. I like that it can be fired single action.
If I got the 64 I would prolly use it for PPC so the single action don't matter. However I think it might be a good HD gun for my wife as well. I gotta get her hands on one to see what she thinks.
I saw a thread here about a place in VA that has a bunch of model 10s for around 200. That sounds good to.

The 15 is a very nice blued .38 with adjustable sights. Very nice gun. A qualified S&W service tech may be able to replace the parts, so that one of the 64's could be used again in DA/SA, like a normal S&W wheel gun.

Duffy's gun shop in Sparks had a few 64s and I think a 67 on Saturday.

If you get a handgun in VA, remember, it has to be shipped to a MD FFL.

I bought one of the VG+ 64s. It arrived in better than expected condition. I think J&G's are still all DAO like mine is, which is unfortunate but forgivable. It is actually my favorite gun to shoot. I love its long smooth trigger, very predictable. After spending a good amount of time with it and a lot of rounds, I trust it to do its job if the unfortunate need ever arises.

I was wary of the blued guns, since I felt like stainless would show less wear.

The Hogue grips are ugly... very very ugly.

I think they are an awesome deal.
