I have a nephew (St. Mary's Co deputy) who recently obtained a 1911 with fixed sights. In order for him to carry it the sights need to changed out for night sights.

As I know nothing about 1911s I was hoping to get some info on sight options and find a gunsmith to pass along to him.

Thanks in advance for the help.

What type of 1911 is it? What type of sight cut does it have? Is the front sight staked or dovetailed?

These things will determine if they can be punched in and out, or if the slide needs to be milled.

Depending on the 1911 there are a couple of tenon sizes for the stock fixed front sight. It can be milled to accept modern sights and will greatly increase the number of options available.

I just went with an adjustable rear target sight and a front sight that fit the narrow tenon of my RIA Govt.

It's a Springfield 1911A1 I think its an older model... maybe 1985. Outside of that I don't have a clue.

It looks like a springfield milspec that's been bubba'd.

Take it to a smith for a safety and function test.

He wants to carry this as his duty weapon?

the front looks like a fixed sight (hard to tell).. may have to have gunsmith fit a nightsight for it.

He used it to qualify last week... worked great.

Does not mean it is safe. Who replaced the slide release? Is it fitted correctly? It also looks like the trigger, bushing and mag release were replaced. Again, done right?

Springfield Armory shows a $100 tech inspection for 1911's on their web site. They also can replace sights and refinish if needed.

If this is a police duty gun, it has to be in top shape. Either Springfield Armory or Novak.

BTW, Chad is out of the gunsmithing business.
