Looking to change my Hex Dragonfly W/3.5 moa dot. It’s a little small would like something near 6moa any suggestions. Adapter plate help as well.

From what I understand those have the same footprint as the Venom. Which I think you can get in 6 moa.

With out knowing the gun, it's hard to say if there are plates to switch to a different foot print.

What would be the typical/common price that I should expect to pay a local gunsmith to mill the slide of a glock so an RMR could be installed --OR-- is it just cheaper to buy the MOS version from the get go?

There aren't many local gunsmiths that are doing these and you will probably wait longer than if you sent it to one of the machinists advertising online.

This one does good work but there are lots of others.

I use these guys. Very good work and fast turnaround time. The last one they did for me had it back in about a week. Give them an email and ask them how their wait is now. They're very responsive.

All my red dots are 6MOA or there about, older eyes that need reading glasses, I figure it will just be faster acquisition with the bigger dot.

My son went 3MOA, and we shoot each other pistols, and I honestly can't say it makes that much of a difference for either us. i.e. I don't think 6MOA over 3MOA really made it much easier for me to pick up the dot, and for my son, the 6MOA over the 3MOA didn't really hamper his accuracy....

But still we both stick with 6MOA for myself and he the 3MOA....

I have a Vortex Viper (very similar to the Venom) and also have a Trijicon RMR 2 on another pistol. Honestly I can't say I shoot any better, or operate any better with the more than twice as expensive Trijicon over the Vortex.

True the Trijicon does appear to be much more rugged and more dot intensity options with a darker tint that appears to be coatings on the lense to deal with washout/glare/fog, so in the most extreme environments where you might have difficulty seeng the dot, the Trijicon might do better or be less likely to break in combat scenarios, so the Trijicon does have added value for that extra cost. At the same time, you're only going to use it to go to the range, the Vortex will perform as needed and cost less than half as much.

I have picked up an Vortex Viper for $169 on sale.

The vortex Viper also has a Flat Dark Earth Model, its an optics planet exclusive, so if you want a FDE version look on Optics planet.

Also assume you're mounting it on a Spingfield pistol, I only have XD-M's from them, but pretty sure they use the same optics mounting system across all their pistols, and adapter plates for the 3 most popular footprints are readily available and cheap from many sources including springfield's store. The Vortex Viper footprint is different from the RMR and Leupold Deltapoint Pro, so you may have to get a different adapter plate to switch from the Dragon Fly, not sure what one the dragonfly used, but I "think" its different from the Vortex Viper.

I just sent out the slide for a Springfield XD-M to be milled, it was $150 but also you've got shipping on top of that. You can find some doing it for even cheaper, BUT, the more expensive service recreates the exact same cut from the factory and thus uses the factory adapter plates. The cheaper are more simple and improvised and require using shortened springs, etc...

So $150, which it typical for most services where you ship off your slide, is a lot less than a whole new pistol with the cut already done from the factory....

Already mentioned, most typical gunsmiths aren't doing optics cuts on slides. Its more involved than the regular fitting of parts with a lathe or end mill.... ...most are doing it on CNC machines, which most gun smiths don't have those... ....you don't have to have a CNC machine to do an optics cut, but for some pistols the Optics cut is just complicated enough, the CNC machine makes its more efficient, practical and affordable.....
