I started priming 9mm brass tonight. Used a model 90200 that came with a kit I bought. I installed the Small Primer guide and dumped in 10 primers in the tray. The first one went really well. The second primer went in sideways, one came out installed upside down. All in all Iost six small pistol primers out of the first 100. I sorted through the brass and pick the same brand and type. I ended up squeezing the handle to bring the primer into view and then slid the brass into the holder. Even doing this I had primers that were sideways or upside down that I had to adjust. Any thoughts?

I had the same problems with mine. They sent me a new Small insert and plunger. They also sent me a new tray as the tray I had was lifting up and primers flipping in the tray. I put a binder clip on the front to keep it down on the old one. Still do it just because I had too before. I don't have any problems any longer. Call them, they will send you a new insert. BUT I half push up each primer to see the anvil before seating the casing any more.

I have the older RCBS hand primer and the tray cover turns and locks into the tray so that it cannot raise up and the primers can't get jumbled if the unit is jarred. RCBS is good about replacing stuff, just give them a call.

Mine is probably 3 or 4 decades old (I bought it used in the 1990s) and have never had any of the problems you describe. I love it except for the round tray doesn't easily accommodate larger primer packaging and the pivoting pin that pushes the plunger up has to be finagled into place when switching out shell holders. I use mine for 45 ACP and Colt so I don't have to swap out the primer size components on my SBD.

I never checked the depth with calipers but mine pass the touch test. I typically only worry that they are seated deeper than the bottom surface of the case.
I go for about a couple thou in some of my 06 semi rifles and habit with the rest of them as prudent measure.
I just tried the inexpensive Lee press tool which worked pretty well without a lot of fuss. Prior to that I used a Lyman which is getting worn a bit.
I bet 30 primed cases exhibited high primers in my last batch.
It only takes a few minutes to be sure vs an oob detonation in an expensive surplus rifle.

RCBS sent me a new set of inserts. The small set looks like the hole is a little smaller than the original one. I changed it, but haven't inserted any primers yet.

The service rep I spoke to kind of eluded to some plastic molding problems and they never balked at replacing them. I only had problems with small primers.

I still half squeeze the handle to look to verify the primer is not upside down or sideways before seating the casing. I haven't had a trouble, but I don't want an exploding try, like someone else had.
